Fotografen mishandeld bij actie tegen zeehondenjacht
De Nederlander Alex Cornelissen is met nog tien andere activisten van milieuorganisatie Sea Shepherd door de Canadese politie gearresteerd. Zij werden donderdag aangehouden, nadat ze foto's van zeehondenjagers hadden gemaakt. Dat heeft de milieuorganisatie vrijdag bekendgemaakt.
De actievoerders hadden zelf de hulp ingeroepen van een Canadees kustwachtschip omdat ze door de jagers werden aangevallen met jachtknuppels en werden geschopt en geslagen. De activisten raakten hierbij gewond. Dat gebeurde in de deels bevroren wateren ongeveer 15 mijl ten noorden van Prince Edward Island, tussen Nova Scotia en New Foundland.
De elf actievoerders werden na hun arrestatie door de Canadese politie per helikopter overgebracht naar kustwachtschip de Amundsen die in de buurt ligt. De arrestanten, afkomstig uit verscheidene landen, weigeren een borgsom te betalen en zijn in hongerstaking gegaan, aldus Sea Shepherd. Het is niet duidelijk waarvan zij beschuldigd worden.
De kapitein van het Sea Shepherd-schip Farley Mowat heeft bij de politie in Charlottetown aangifte gedaan van geweldpleging. De milieuorganisatie heeft bewijs tegen de zeehondenjagers in de vorm van videobeelden en foto's.

Arts: Zahra Kazemi werd gemarteld en verkracht
A doctor employed at Bagheeyehollah Hospital in Tehran (connected with the revolutionary guards) where Zahra Kazemi, deceased Iranian/Canadian photojournalist was transfered before dying, left Iran and for the first time, in an interview with a German publication divulged that the regime's interrogators had brutally gang-raped the photojournalist while she was under questioning and torture.
The German weekly, Die Zeit [in the Thursday, March 31st issue] states that Kazemi was delivered to the hospital directly after undergoing severe torture in prison; she died on July 11th, 2003. Dr. Shahram Azam, who examined Kazemi at the hospital was able to provide a firsthand account. Fifty four year old Kazemi was in a coma when delivered to the hospital in the early hours of June 27th 2003; her body was covered with contusions and as such, she was transfered to the emergency room of Bagheeyehollah Hospital.
Dr. Azam reports that it was quite clear that she had been severely tortured and brutally gang-raped. He went on to say that the regime's authorities (the security forces and the judiciary) continue to play the blame game and therefore at this juncture felt that there was nothing left for him to do but to leave Iran and find a way to inform the world.
Dr. Azam left Iran with his wife and daughter and has moved Canada on asylum for the time being.

They said they had no record of Shahram Azam working as doctor in the hospital where he said he saw evidence of flogging in addition to battered feet, extracted nails and a broken nose. "These allegations made by an Iranian refugee are baseless and false," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told the official IRNA news agency.
"Hospital officials have denied this person's name was on the medical staff team," he added. IRNA also quoted Mostafa Naderi, head of the Baghiyatollah hospital where Azam says he examined 54-year-old Kazemi, saying Azam had never worked there.

Prins Charles noemt journalisten "bloody people"
The Prince of Wales’s hatred of the media was exposed today after he was caught muttering under his breath his contempt for the press and branded a the BBC’s royal correspondent “awful”.
The heir to the throne’s mumbles, in which he revealed a particular dislike for the BBC’s royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell, were picked up on microphones buried in the snow during an official Clarence House photocall in Klosters.
The grumpy groom-to-be said under his breath to sons William and Harry as they faced the large press pack: “Bloody people”.
Aides said the Prince was angry after the paparazzi snatched pictures of William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton Wednesday. (Zie hier en hier.)

Nikon introduceert D50 (en meer DSLR's in nabije toekomst)
Nikon is planning to release a new range of digital SLR cameras, including a model called the D50, the company said Thursday.
Word of the D50's impending launch first emerged when it was discovered that a copy of the user's manual for the camera had been uploaded onto one of the company's Web sites. The manual was soon taken down.
"The user manual was uploaded in error and we can't tell you when the official announcement about the D50 will be made," said Susumu Enomoto, a spokesman for Nikon. However, he noted that the existence of a user manual for the D50 suggests the camera will go on sale in the not-too-distant future.
Nikon would not reveal any of the D50's specifications and features. But the D50 is one of several new digital SLR models that the company is planning to release following the success of the popular D70 model that went on sale in March 2004, Enomoto said.
"We are now developing a full range of new models from the top-end to popularly-priced models, but we can't say anything more now," he said. Nikon claims to have sold about 1 million D70s globally between March 2004 and this February, and this figure accounts for about 40 percent of the worldwide digital SLR market during that period, the company said.

World Press Photo winnares fotografeerde gewonde Amerikaanse soldaten
De New Yorkse Nina Berman fotografeerde van oktober 2003 tot mei 2004 Amerikaanse soldaten die gewond terugkeerden uit Irak. Hun portretten en verhalen zijn gebundeld in haar eerste boek: Purple Hearts: Back from Iraq. Door de overheid zijn ze bestempeld als held en gehonoreerd met een Purple Heart voor hun wonden. In dit boek zie je ze in hun omgeving, weg van al het decorum rond de Irak- oorlog en vertellen de piepjonge veteranen over hun levens en toekomstplannen.
Nina Berman fotografeerde de afgelopen 15 jaar het politieke en sociale klimaat van de VS. Haar werk is internationaal tentoongesteld en gepubliceerd in o.a. Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, GEO en Paris Match.
Een foto uit haar Purple Hearts serie won dit jaar een tweede prijs in de categorie Portretten bij World Press Photo.
Nina Berman zal tijdens de World Press Photo Awards Days een diapresentatie van haar werk geven in ABC Treehouse, Voetboogstraat 11 te Amsterdam op zaterdagmiddag 23 april van 14.00 tot 17.00.

Ook Dordtenaar wil fotograaf behouden
Hoofdredacteur Hans Kerstien van dagblad De Dordtenaar gaat met de andere hoofdredacteuren van PCM en Wegeners fusiekranten praten over het aangekondigde ontslag van de vaste fotografen. Bij zijn krant gaat het om 1 fotojournalist, die er al 35 jaar werkt. "Een slechte aftrap", zegt Kerstien in De Journalist. Eerder werd het ontslag van vaste fotografen bij het Utrechts Dagblad al ingetrokken.

Telegraaf ensceneert foto "als de persoon niet wil of kan"
Bij een Telegraafbericht over een turntrainer die door een ex-leerlinge van ontucht was beschuldigd, stond een foto van een man die een meisje bij een klimrek vasthoudt. Een iel lettertje meldde dat de foto was geënsceneerd.
Jantina Bruin, fotoredactrice van De Telegraaf: "Het gebeurt wel vaker dat wij een foto moeten ensceneren. Omdat de mensen in kwestie niet op de foto willen, of kunnen."
Ellie Speet van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Fotojournalisten vindt dit maar een rare gedachtegang. "Dus als je geen foto kunt maken, bedenk je wat. Tja, dan kun je alle kanten op."

Vrijheid Turkse pers onder druk
De Europese Unie gaat met Turkije onderhandelen over mogelijke toetreding. De persvrijheid kon daarbij wel eens een belangrijke hindernis worden. Die wordt namelijk danig ingeperkt. ‘Binnen een jaar zitten alle Turkse journalisten achter slot en grendel.’
In alle delen van het land gaan journalisten in Turkije de straat op om te protesteren tegen de nieuwe Turkse strafwet. Die gaat per 1 april van kracht en legt de Turkse persvrijheid grote beperkingen op. Zo wordt gevangenisstraf weer ingevoerd voor journalisten die zich schuldig hebben gemaakt aan smaad.
De beperkingen die journalisten krijgen opgelegd gelden ook voor fotografen. Beeldmateriaal dat zonder toestemming van de afgebeelde personen wordt gepubliceerd, is illegaal als de foto inbreuk doet op hun privacy. Fotografen riskeren hiermee een gevangenisstraf van maximaal negen maanden. ‘Een foto van een maffiabaas die dineert met een politicus mag dus niet worden gepubliceerd’, legt fotograaf Cenker Tezel uit. ‘Zoiets publiekelijk maken is toch in het belang van de burger?’

Unieke collectie glasnegatieven gevonden
Het Limburgs Museum in Venlo stelt tijdens het Nationaal Museumweekeinde 1800 glasnegatieven tentoon, die bij toeval werden ontdekt tijdens de Vrijmarkt in Amsterdam. Het gaat volgens het museum om prachtige opnames over het Limburg van de jaren dertig van de afgelopen eeuw.
De glasnegatieven zijn gemaakt door een fotopersbureau dat toentertijd werkte voor geïllustreerde tijdschriften als De Katholieke Illustratie en Mooi Limburg.
Het Limburgs Museum heeft een selectie gemaakt van opnames die het straatleven laten zien in een decennium dat paard en kar nog heel gewoon waren. Het zijn foto's van tal van dorpen en steden verspreid over de hele provincie.

Nieuw NVF-bestuur treedt aan
Hans Kouwenhoven en Werry Crone, voorzitter en secretaris vanaf het eerste uur na de fusie NVF/NVJ verlaten per 23 april het sectiebestuur NVF, fotojournalisten van de NVJ. Zij hebben zich vanaf 1997 als bestuursleden bijzonder voor de sectie ingezet. Tevens treden Jeroen van der Meyde en Ed Oudenaarden af, bestuursleden respectievelijk sinds 2001 en 2002. Ook NVJ-bestuurslid Jaap Herschel met de portefeuille NVF, die zich zeer verdienstelijk heeft gemaakt voor de fotojournalisten treedt af.
Als opvolger van Hans Kouwenhoven heeft het NVF-bestuur uit zijn midden Cees van Alten tot voorzitter benoemd. Het NVF-bestuur is verheugd vijf bestuurskandidaten te kunnen voorstellen op de jaarvergadering op 23 april in de Observant in Amersfoort.
Eric Brinkhorst (1966)
Volgt de Middelbare Ondernemersschool en de Fotovakschool. Vanaf zijn 19e werkt hij als zelfstandig fotojournalist en begint bij dag- en weekbladen van Wegener/TcTubantia. Als freelance fotojournalist is hij werkzaam voor AD, NRC, ANP, voor diverse vakbladen, tijdschriften en overheidsinstellingen;
Sake Elzinga (1959)
Werkt na de fotovakschool sinds 1978 professioneel in de fotografie, eerst een drietal jaar in vaste dienst bij diverse fotobedrijven. Vanaf 1981 werkt hij als zelfstandig fotojournalist, hij is vanaf 1986 vaste freelance fotograaf voor NRC Handelsblad. Hij is allround gespecialiseerd.
Michael Kooren (1953)
Begint in 1976 in Amerika tijdens zijn studie Engels als fotograaf voor Gainsville Sun. Na twee-en-half jaar komt hij terug naar Nederland om zijn studie af te maken. In 1980 gaat hij verder als fotojournalist voor het Utrecht Nieuwsblad. Vervolgens werkt hij als freelancer voor NRC Handelsblad, AD en Reuters. Sinds ruim twee jaar werkt hij ook als docent reportage aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag.
Joep Lennarts (1958)
Begint na zijn studie geschiedenis in 1981 als redacteur bij Brabants Dagblad. Werkt vanaf 1986 als zelfstandig gevestigd fotograaf in ’s Hertogenbosch, is een achttal jaren vaste freelancer bij de Volkskrant en werkt vanaf 1997 aan tentoonstellingen en projecten. Hij voert een aantal opdrachten uit die tot publicatie in boekvorm leiden. Sinds 1990 werkt hij de helft van zijn tijd als freelance fotojournalist voor Brabants Dagblad en verder voor een groot aantal culturele instellingen.

Is autodidact en begint in 1976 als freelancer voor het Nieuwsblad van het Noorden en educatieve uitgeverijen. Richt in Groningen in 1981 fotopersbureau EFG op. Werkt voor regionale en landelijke media, later ook op contract voor Reuters. Verhuist in 1991 naar Utrecht. Is werkzaam als fotoredacteur en fotojournalist voor diverse media waaronder Het Financieele Dagblad, FNV en diverse bedrijven en uitgeverijen. Is sinds 20 jaar verbonden aan Hollandse Hoogte.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 uitgelekt
Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced Adobe Photoshop CS2, a major upgrade to the professional industry standard for digital image editing and creation. Available as a stand-alone software application or as a key component of Adobe Creative Suite 2, also announced today (see separate press release), Photoshop CS2 software brings a new level of power, precision and control to the digital photography experience and to the overall creative process.
"Photoshop CS2 pushes the envelope with powerful features and simplified workflows that provide photographers and creative professionals the freedom to deliver stunning images," said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president of Digital Imaging and Digital Video Products at Adobe. Photoshop CS2 integrates a new set of intuitive tools, including an enhanced Spot Healing Brush, for handling common photographic problems such as blemishes, red-eye, noise, blurring and lens distortion. Responding to requests from film, broadcast and video professionals, Photoshop CS2 now allows non-destructive editing and the creation and editing of 32-Bit High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, ideal for 3D rendering and advanced compositing.
The new Camera Raw 3.0 workflow allows settings for multiple raw files to be simultaneously modified. In addition batch processing of raw files, to JPEG, TIFF, DNG or PSD formats, can now be done in the background without launching the main Photoshop executable. Integrated, non-destructive cropping and straightening controls allow raw files to be easily prepared for final output.
Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Mac OS X version 10.2.8 through 10.3.8, Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2, will begin shipping in May to customers in the United States and Canada, and will be available through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe Store at http://www.adobe.com/store . International versions are expected to begin shipping in late May and early June. Adobe Photoshop CS2 will be available for an estimated street price of US$599 and licensed users of any previous version of Photoshop can upgrade for US$149.

Capa-tentoonstelling in Berlijn groot succes
More than 50,000 visitors have already visited the large Robert Capa retrospective in Berlin. Fifty years after the death of Robert Capa, 300 photographs look back on this great legend who became famous in 1936 for documenting the Spanish Civil War and the photograph of ’Fallen Soldiers’.
Capa’s work is a manifesto against war, injustice and oppression. Like his friend and colleague, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Capa defined an era of great photojournalism. This comprehensive retrospective of Robert Capa, the first of its kind in Germany, displays never-before-published photographs in addition to his war reportages. The exhibition can only be seen in Berlin, until April 18th, (closed Tuesdays).
